Collateral Damage: The Ordeal of the Great War

Baltimore School for the Arts teams up with the National Park Service to present Collateral Damage: Stories of World War I. Based on primary sources at the Maryland Historical Society, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, and historic newspapers, these student-written monologues bring to life the experiences of everyday people affected by the Great War.

The reality of war is something that is very hidden from those that do not partake in the war themselves. Coming face to face with those truths, and the effect it had on the city and state we live in is rare. Rarer still, is the opportunity to see those truths conjured up by high school sophomores. Centered on nurses, aides, soldiers, and their families as they interact with the enormous army hospital that is what we now know as Fort McHenry during World War I, Collateral Damage explores the love, loss, excitement, and pain that Marylanders experienced during a challenging time in our history.
