Tom Askey joined BSA in 2010 after spending 3 ½ years teaching social studies in other Baltimore City Schools. He was a full-time classroom teacher at BSA through the 2014-15 school year when he transitioned into the role of academic assistant principal. He graduated with honors from the Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in history and earned his M.Ed. in educational administration and leadership from Loyola University Maryland in 2013. At Penn State, he earned membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society for history. He was selected as BSA’s district-approved “Teacher of the Year” for the 2011-2012 school year. A recipient of the Mark Joseph Professional Development Grant at BSA in 2012, Askey spent time in Moscow and St. Petersburg studying Russian art and culture in an effort to support the school’s year-long project on Russia in 2013-14 titled A Russian Serenade. Askey was selected by a former student as a class of 2016 Sarah D. Barder Fellow by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for excellence in teaching. He also helped organize and lead a student trip to Ghana in West Africa in 2017 in support of the school’s year-long examination of contemporary art and culture on the African continent titled “Africa Now.” Prior to teaching, Askey was a classically trained chef who received his culinary degree (A.O.S) from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT.
